Entrepreneurship has long been part of the Stellenbosch University (SU) story. From pioneering research and breakthrough technologies to student-led ventures tackling real-world challenges, the University has cultivated an environment where ideas can become meaningful impact. Recognising the need to create a dedicated home for student entrepreneurs, SU LaunchLab established MatiePreneurs, the University’s official student entrepreneurship community.

More than just a programme, MatiePreneurs is a vibrant Community of Practice that connects students from every faculty with the people, resources, and opportunities needed to explore entrepreneurship. Whether a student has an early-stage idea or is already building a startup, the community provides a platform to learn, collaborate, and grow alongside like-minded innovators.

“The establishment of MatiePreneurs reflects SU LaunchLab’s broader vision of making entrepreneurship an accessible and rewarding pathways for all students. By bringing together aspiring founders from diverse disciplines, the initiative encourages interdisciplinary collaboration, often where the most innovative ideas emerge,” said Nadine Price, SU LaunchLab Student Entrepreneurship Officer.

Through the community, students gain access to entrepreneurship bootcamps, innovation workshops, startup competitions, networking events, mentoring opportunities, and specialised incubation programmes. These experiences equip students with practical skills while helping them validate ideas, develop business models, and connect with potential collaborators, customers, and investors.

MatiePreneurs also serves as the University’s gateway to national initiatives such as the Entrepreneurship Development in Higher Education (EDHE) Intervarsity Competition, where student ventures receive coaching and mentorship before representing SU on the national stage.

Since its establishment, SU LaunchLab has grown into one of Africa’s leading university business incubators, supporting entrepreneurs in transforming promising ideas into sustainable businesses. Its student entrepreneurship initiatives have evolved alongside this journey, reflecting a long-standing commitment to fostering innovation on campus.

Today, MatiePreneurs represents the student-facing expression of that mission. It provides an accessible starting point where curiosity can develop into entrepreneurial ambition, ensuring that students are exposed not only to the principles of entrepreneurship but also to the practical support required to build ventures with real-world impact.

Universities play a critical role in preparing graduates for a rapidly changing world. While academic excellence remains central, entrepreneurial thinking has become equally valuable, enabling graduates to identify opportunities, solve complex problems, and create new economic and social value.

Nadine added, “By creating a dedicated entrepreneurship community, we are helping students develop these capabilities early in their academic journeys. The result is a campus culture where innovation is celebrated, collaboration is encouraged, and entrepreneurship becomes a viable career pathway rather than a distant aspiration.”

As students engage with real-world challenges through MatiePreneurs, they gain confidence, expand their professional networks, and develop the resilience needed to navigate uncertainty, qualities that benefit them regardless of whether they launch a startup or pursue careers in industry, academia, or the public sector.

As MatiePreneurs continues to grow, it is becoming an increasingly important part of SU’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. With a growing community of student founders, regular events and competitions, and stronger connections to industry and the wider startup ecosystem, the initiative is helping shape a new generation of innovators equipped to address Africa’s most pressing challenges.
